Roses are red, violets are blue, this article has some jokes for you! Everyone loves to spin jokes out of the classic nursery rhyme, “roses are red, violets are blue,” but do they know its history?

History of “Roses Are Red, Violets Are Blue”

This classic line has existed for centuries, dating back to its creation by poet Sir Edmund Spenser in the 16th century. In 1590, Spenser wrote the epic poem, The Faerie Queene, which spanned across a total of 7 books. Book Three, Canto 6, Stanza 6 contains the lines that sparked the famous rhyme. In full, it reads:

It was upon a Sommers shynie day,

When Titan faire his beames did display,

In a fresh fountaine, farre from all mens vew,

She bath’d her brest, the boyling heat t’allay;

She bath’d with roses red, and violets blew,

And all the sweetest flowres, that in the forest grew.

Throughout the following years, the line was produced again in another famous work of literature known as “Gammer Gurton’s Garland: Or the Nursery Parnassus.” In 1784, Joseph Ritson published this collection of English nursery rhymes for children that included the following excerpt:

The rose is red, the violet’s blue

The honey’s sweet, and so are you.

Thou art my love and I am thine;

I drew thee to my Valentine:

The lot was cast and then I drew,

And Fortune said it shou’d be you

Many believe that the famous “roses are red, violets are blue” line originated from Ritson’s poem. This is because Ritson’s nursery rhyme portrays it in a more compatible format to how the line is presently used.

While most people may not be familiar with its origins, many are fans of the classic jokes that stem from the famous nursery rhyme. They work as great jokes for children, flirtatious lines to use while dating, or dirty jokes to laugh about with friends. Not to mention, they’re perfect for inspiring corny poems.
