A jury has been selected for Hunter Biden’s trial on three federal gun charges, and opening arguments are expected in the Wilmington, Del., courthouse Tuesday. Several members of Hunter Biden’s family were in court with him Monday, the first day of what could be the first of two federal trials of the president’s son as his father seeks a second term in the White House. The judge and lawyers for both sides questioned dozens of prospective jurors to determine whether they could be impartial.
The charges against Biden stem from a 2018 gun purchase in Delaware. He separately faces nine tax-related federal charges. The tax case is scheduled to go to trial in September in Los Angeles, two months before the presidential election.

Here's what to know:
Hunter Biden faces three felony charges related to a gun he purchased in 2018: He is accused of making two false statements in filling out the paperwork to purchase the weapon, specifically when he claimed not to be addicted to or using illegal drugs, and then unlawfully possessing that Colt revolver for 11 days. It is against the law to possess a weapon while using illegal drugs.
The trial, in federal court in Wilmington, is not being televised, and reporters are not permitted to send live updates from the courtroom or the overflow room. Washington Post reporters will post updates here as frequently as possible during the day.
If Biden is convicted, the maximum sentence for the most serious crime in the indictment is 10 years in prison. Under federal sentencing guidelines, however, Biden — who has no prior felonies and has acknowledged being addicted to drugs at the time of the gun purchase — would probably face far less.
